Accelerator Malfunctions

With Toyota recalling several models over the past year due to sudden acceleration, the public has again paid attention to this occasional mechanical failure. What many do not realize is that the Toyota incident is not the only case of a full-scale recall, as Audi similarly recalled several models in the 1980s. On a smaller scale, sudden acceleration can be a terrifying mechanical problem.

Stopping the Vehicle

The first priority of any person caught up in sudden acceleration is to bring the vehicle to a halt, contact emergency workers, and make sure that the vehicle receives immediate repairs. There are three easy options for stopping a suddenly accelerating vehicle:

  • Apply the brake, which will stop or significantly dampen most motor vehicles’ engines.
  • Shift into neutral, which will cease the engine from powering the vehicle’s wheels.
  • Cut the ignition, which will sever all power, including power steering or brakes.

Out of these options, trying to brake is perhaps the safest. Beyond this, shifting into neutral and pulling into an emergency lane is also a fairly safe way to stay out of traffic. If the worst case scenario occurs, in which neither of these options work, turning the car off can stop further acceleration.
