A massive car pileup in Florida over the weekend has claimed 11 lives and sent 18 people to the hospital.

An estimated 12 cars, six tractor-trailers, and a motor home collided on Interstate 75 in Gainesville, Florida early Sunday morning, less than a quarter of an hour after Florida Highway Patrol reopened the stretch of highway. Dense fog and heavy smoke from brush fires made visibility dangerously low.

Witnesses say they saw cars getting hit multiple times and bursting into flames. Several cars were wedged under tractor-trailers. Investigators are seeking the help of anthropologists from the University of Florida to help identify the deceased.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this horrific crash.

A Wausau man plead guilty to his fourth driving while intoxicated conviction this week after he was arrested late last year.

The 37 year-old was intoxicated and texting on his cellphone when he rear-ended a squad car at a stoplight. The officer discovered an uncased rifle, uncased bows and arrows, and several empty beer cans in the suspect’s car. Charges of possession of a firearm by a felon may be dropped in a plea agreement.

A breathalyzer test revealed that his blood alcohol content was 0.132, over the legal limit of 0.08. Due to his prior drunk driving convictions, however, he is not allowed to have a blood alcohol content over 0.04.

The 28 year-old man was killed when he collided with a cable strung between two fence posts. Emergency crews said that the man was unresponsive by the time they arrived. He was transported to Winona Community Memorial Hospital where he later died.

A 38 year-old friend who was snowmobiling with him was not hurt. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is currently investigating the fatal accident.

Two people were seriously hurt over the weekend after their car drove into a Green Bay home.

The accident happened in the early morning hours on Sunday. When rescue workers arrived at the scene, the vehicle was almost completely inside the home and its front wheels were falling into the basement. After the car was towed out, the driver and passenger of the car were extricated and taken to St. Vincent Hospital.

The two people who live in the house were not harmed. However, the house has been listed as condemned and they will not be able to return while the investigation is ongoing. Authorities say drinking and speed were likely a factor in the crash.

Fewer than 600 died on Wisconsin roadways for the fourth consecutive year in 2011.

569 people died in vehicular accidents last year, seven more than in 2010 but 59 fewer than the state’s five-year average. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, this is the first time in 84 years that traffic fatalities were under 600 for four years in a row, the last time being from 1924-1927.

Pedestrian, bicycle, and car-related deaths slightly increased as motorcycle fatalities decreased by 18 percent. The director of the DOT’s Bureau of Transportation Safety claims there is no specific factor that is responsible for the fewer traffic deaths, but states that most of the fatal accidents were caused by irresponsible decisions and bad driving habits.

A new drunk driving task force, funded by a $96,000 federal grant, will patrol for four hours after the Packers divisional playoff game next month to make sure impaired drivers are off the streets.

In a trial run earlier this month after the Packers-Raiders game, the task force issued six citations to drunk drivers. From February to September, 103 citations were issued by officers. So far since October, 32 drunk drivers have been charged.

Fans attending the home game will only be able to purchase two alcoholic drinks at a time and last call comes in the third quarter. The Packers organization offers a designated driver program after the games and Green Bay Metro is providing free bus rides.

Two people were killed and one is in critical condition after a two-car accident occurred on Highway 26.

A 39 year-old man headed northbound lost control of his vehicle on a curve when he traveled into the southbound lane and crashed head-on into a car driven by a 22 year-old woman. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman’s 23 year-old passenger is currently at the University Hospital in Madison.

Officers do not believe alcohol or speeding were factors in the crash. Highway 26 has seen many fatal accidents over the years, which prompted the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to upgrade it with passing lanes. Police often patrol to look for accidents.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the two victims.

Subaru of America and Honda Motor Co. have issued recalls due to customer complaints about their brakes.

The 2012 models of Subaru Legacies, Outbacks, and Imprezas are being recalled due to a brake defect involving the master brake cylinder. 112 customers have complained about the brake pedal shifting down further than expected, causing them to miscalculate how much pressure to apply. No injuries or accidents have resulted from this defect.

Over 100,000 Honda GL-1800 motorcycles made from 2001-2012 are being recalled after over two dozen riders complained that the rear brake drags. A fire or a crash could result from the drag. Honda states that only about 4% of all the GL-1800 motorcycles have this problem.
