Rural Roads Most Deadly for Travel

Overall traffic deaths in Wisconsin were down in 2009, but death tolls in rural areas added up to be the highest in the past five years.

Reports say the three main culprits are high-speed driving, lack of guardrails and lack of divided highways to separate oncoming traffic. Because the roads are more open, people tend to drive faster, heightening the possiblity of losing control of the vehicle.

Accidents are less likely to be seen by passers-by and reported to authorities. Also, emergency responders cannot arrive as quickly because of the rural locations.

Drivers are calling for greater safety measures, and the DOT has already installed guard rails in some areas.
