New technology helps prevent pedestrian accidents

A study found that pedestrian accidents make up 12 percent of the total fatal car accidents that occur in a year. Many people are now working to create technology that would prevent pedestrian accidents.

This technology is called crash avoidance technology and has already been introduced in 19 models of cars. The technology would prevent crashes by alerting drivers of obstructions in the roadway and then applying the brakes if the driver does not. This technology could prevent 39,000 pedestrian accidents per year.

The technology is still being reviewed, and, as of now, it can only detect pedestrians who are already in the path of the vehicle. Researchers are working to create a system that would detect pedestrians that are also near the vehicle but not directly in its path.
