Iraq veteran sentenced for fatal DWI crash

Three college students were killed and one was injured when a drunk driver struck their vehicle last October. The friends were driving back home to Milwaukee from the University of Minnesota when their car got a flat tire.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 32 year-old Iraq veteran, was drunk when he plowed into their disabled vehicle in the emergency lane along Interstate 34/90/94. He says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and friends and family say he has abused alcohol in the past as a way to cope.

The judge believed his condition was a mitigating factor and sentenced him to thirteen years in prison along with fifteen years extended supervision, significantly less time than the suggested 25-31 years by prosecutors.
