Hybrids protect passengers better than conventional cars

Passengers in hybrid vehicles are 25% less likely to be injured in car accidents than those in conventional cars of the same model, says a new report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Hybrids are safer than conventional vehicles because they are heavier. The batteries in hybrids add on an average of 10% more weight to the vehicle than non-hybrid cars. Heavier vehicles protect passengers better in case of an accident because they can better absorb the impact.

Unfortunately, hybrids are not as safe to pedestrians. They are so quiet that hybrids are 20% more likely to be involved in pedestrian accidents because people cannot hear them approaching.
