Traffic deaths increase in 2012

According to preliminary statistics recently released by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, traffic-related fatalities have increased so far in 2012 compared to this time last year.

In February, 34 people lost their lives in 25 accidents, which is 12 more than February 2011 and one more than Wisconsin’s five-year average. As of February 29, a total of 78 people have died on Wisconsin roadways. This is 17 more than last year and seven more than the five-year average.

Officials at the department believe a significant portion of the accidents could have been prevented if people buckled up. Seatbelts protect you from being ejected or thrown about in the vehicle.
