Defective airbags investigated by NHTSA

Federal safety regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, have launched an investigation into a complaint it received involving a defect airbag that injured a driver.

In the complaint, the driver says his side-curtain airbag deployed with a metal bracket, which sliced his ear in half. The man was driving a new 2012 Hyundai Elantra. Representatives from Hyundai say they have not received any other reports of injuries from side airbag deployments.

Neither the NHTSA nor Hyundai have been able to look at the car yet, as the investigation is in its early stages. The Elantra was named the North American Car of the Year in January.
