NHTSA fines Volvo for slow response in recalls

Volvo has been fined $1.5 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after it failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. The car manufacturer issued seven recall campaigns from 2010-2012.

Safety defects such as stalling engines, incorrect tire-pressure labeling, and defective airbag deployments affected more than 32,000 Volvo vehicles. Fortunately, there were no reports of accidents, injuries, or property damage.

When planning a recall, car makers are required by federal law to notify the administration within five business days. If the company fails to do so, fines are issued. Volvo has said it will pay the fine in order to avoid litigation.
