Turn-around time for drug testing in Wisconsin rises to 263 days

The backlog in Wisconsin’s blood drug testing is allowing for a proliferation of drug-addled drivers on the road, Fox6 News reported on July 20.

The hygiene director of forensic toxicology at the University of Wisconsin State Laboratory Amy Miles said it is true that turnaround time for drug testing takes much longer than the turnaround time for alcohol, which averages three days. However, the need for alcohol blood tests in recent years has decreased, while blood test requests for drugs has increased from 2,355 in 2003 to 4,350 in 2013. Because of the extensive prep time and procedures for each individual drug, not to mention the serious backlog of drug test requests, blood tests for drugs are taking as much as 263 days to come back.
