2014 marks deadliest recent year for train accidents in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Railroad Safety Commissioner Jeff Plale reported that the first train fatality of this year, which happened when an 8-year-old Milwaukee local was hit by a train on Pleasant Prairie, causing his death on Friday, January 2, came at the heels of the year which proved to have the most train accident casualties in recent years.

Plale said that from January to August of 2013, the state recorded only one fatality related to train accidents; the same period of the following year yielded seven deaths.

Plale said that train traffic in the state has increased lately and trains, which are often one to two miles long and travel at 50 miles per hour, do not stop easily.
