Research for potential underage drinking ordinance underway

An initiative that promotes responsible drinking and further discourages underage minors from consuming alcohol is brewing in Waukesha, WDJT Milwaukee reported on February 23.

Alderman Steve Johnson, who supports the proposal, said it could be an improvement to the current law, which provides penalties for adults who give or make it possible for minors to gain access to alcoholic beverages or liquors.

In the ordinance that was discussed, any adult who owns a property where minors are consuming alcohol could be fined up to $5,000, even if they were not aware that alcohol was being served. This would even include apartment owners or colleges with dorms.

Waukesha council members have been instructed to continue researching the potential ordinance and weigh on whether or not they believe it would help prevent underage drinking in the city.
