Driver charged in relation to fatal bicycle accident released on bail

Twenty-year-old South Milwaukee resident Brett Hartley appeared in court on June 19 and was charged with two counts of second-degree reckless homicide after a fatal bicycle accident, WISN 12 reported.

According to preliminary investigations, Hartley was driving his vehicle after being up all night at a friend’s house. He fell asleep at the wheel near Muskego on State Road 36 and veered into two bicyclists, 45-year-old Paul Brown and 54-year-old Anthony Oliver. Both cyclists died at the scene, despite the presence of an off-duty paramedic who witnessed the entire accident.

Hartley posted a $5,000 bail. Another hearing has been set for the last day of July.

Reports indicate that Hartley stated he wanted to stop in Milwaukee to rest, but two girls he was giving a ride wanted to be dropped off in Racine County. Hartley’s attorney said that Hartley and his family were all praying for the victims’ families.
