Police officer killed in two-vehicle collision

A police officer lost his life after a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources truck crossed over the center line on Dane County Road N in the town of Albion, causing a head-on collision with his patrol squad car last Monday, November 23.

The victim was identified as 33-year-old Ryan Copeland, who was the McFarland Police Department’s K-9 officer, and who had been working as a police officer since 2013. Copeland reportedly spent 10 years in the United States Army, with much of his time spent as a Green Beret Special Forces member.

The driver of the DNR pickup, a female who worked for the department, was transported to a hospital in Janesville for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.

Police authorities said that Copeland was just beginning his shift when the two-vehicle collision occurred. They noted that the crash remains under investigation by authorities.

The Village Board held a moment of silence in honor of Copeland.
